Now cordless tools are generally as powerful as their electrically connected counterparts and still have the advantage of being far more portable since they are no longer tied to a static power source.
Even still, cordless tool manufacturers are not resting on their laurels, and are working to improve both battery life and tool longevity while bringing the costs per volt down to a affordable level. One thing is certain, cordless tools make a great gift for anyone who likes to work with their hands.
Cutting the Cord
Cordless tool batteries come in different flavors. Some will even use the standard alkaline batteries that are well known and loved. However these batteries are not as powerful as some of the technology on the market today.
There are three main types of cordless tool batteries. They are nickle cadmium, known as NiCd, nickle hydride known as NiMh and Lithium-Ion or Li-ion. Of these three, Li-ion has become the leading battery technology due to various factors encountered in the other battery types but are reduced or eliminated in the Li-ion battery. One is battery memory, both NiCd and NiMh both can develop battery memory from repetitive charging at a certain level.
While changing charging practices can prevent battery memory, in the case of tool use it can be difficult or counter to using the tool for the purpose intended and thus making it useless. Another factor is both NiCd and NiMh both demonstrate a perceptible loss in power over the use of the tool.
Li-ion does not have the same power drop and thus will have the same power load through the duration of charge. All of these factors combined have made Li-ion the leading battery technology for cordless tools.
